Coming into Force of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the IRU on Development of Road Transport Freight Haulage
between Asia and Europe and between the Main World Markets, across the Territory of the Republic of Uzbekistan
The Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan signed, on 14 November 2008, a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Road Transport Union (IRU) on development of road transport freight haulage between Europe and Asia and between the main world markets, across the territory of the Republic of Uzbekistan.
In accordance with the Memorandum, the Signatories agreed to develop comprehensive cooperation in building up international road transport haulage between Asia, Europe and the main world markets. The Memorandum, specifically, envisages joint measures to attract investments and investment technologies and to facilitate border crossing and customs clearance procedures. This includes, inter alia, development of international logistic centres along transportation routes from China to new markets, such as Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, the Russian Federation, the Caucasus and Europe.
The Memorandum should thus be instrumental in early practical implementation of a tri-lateral agreement that China, the Kyrgyz Republic and Republic of Uzbekistan signed in 2003.
The Memorandum also records the Signatories' joint desire to improve the legal framework of international road transport communications - above all on the basis of universally accepted UN agreements and conventions, to develop transit carriages, and to enhance the level of traffic safety on international routes.
The Memorandum confirms the priority importance of the NELTI Project's implementation with the aim to create new international transport routes in the region at large and across the territory of Uzbekistan that should promote the development of trade relations between Asia, Europe and the main markets.
