A meeting of the Round Table within the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) was held in Krasnoyarsk on 14 November 2008 to discuss the development of road transport carriages between Asia and Europe.
The Round Table meeting was arranged with active support of the administration of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and chaired by Krasnoyarsk Transport Minister Alexandr Yadov. It was attended by representatives of transport ministries and other government agencies of the People's Republic of China, Republic of Kazakhstan, Republic of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyz Republic and the Russian Federation.
Igor Rounov, head of the IRU Permanent Delegation to the CIS Region, told the meeting about the course of implementation of the NELTI Project and the IRU's drive to revive the Great Silk Road.
The representative of the Transport Ministry of the PRC, presented China's position concerning the development of road transport haulage from China to Europe through transport communications across the SCO member countries. According to this position, this haulage should follow three main latitudinal routes - Northern (across Kazakhstan and Russia), Central (across Central Asia, the Caspian region and the Caucasus), and Southern (across Central Asia, Iran and Turkey). Chinese representatives intend to move their proposals concerning the haulage routes at a meeting of the SCO transport ministers scheduled to take place in early 2009.
The PRC's position concerning the routes of goods deliveries to Europe by road transport thus coincides completely with the routes chosen for the carriages within the NELTI Project.
