Istanbul, 2013-01-29

Click to enlarge After four months of monitoring physical and non-physical barriers for trade and international road transport in the Arab world, NELTI-4 preliminary results from 62 trips to and from 11 Arab countries along 14 different routes, were analysed in the framework of the IDB’s TA Grant to the AULT.

NELTI-4 so far confirms that border-crossing remains the main impediment to free flowing trade by road, with 44% of transport time being lost at borders and some drivers waiting as long as 2 weeks.

Despite this huge impediment, preliminary result also show a real potential for such commercial deliveries across the region, with an overall freight volume of over 1,034,500 tonnes transported and an average 2,171 km per round trip.

The NELTI-4 final results and recommendations for national action plans to further facilitate road transport and the industry’s services is expected to be published in June 2013.
