Efforts of International Organisations
| Revitalisation of the Great Silk Road and promotion of transport and economic ties between Asia and Europe have benefited from increasing attention on the part of international organisations in the recent decades.
The efforts of international organisations in advancing these goals have been termed “Development of Euro-Asian Transport Linkages” and are undertaken along three main avenues:
For international organisations, the key objectives in developing Euro-Asian transport connections are:
-
to facilitate socio-economic development of nations traversed by Euro-Asian land transport routes;
-
to diversify goods delivery routes between Asia and Europe, to create a new market niche for a variety of “road-transportable” goods, and to lessen the dependence of Euro-Asian trade on maritime transport;
-
to engage landlocked and transit countries in international trade;
-
to contribute to the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals; and to guarantee backup options for continued trade flows in case of force majeure or disruptions in the operation of international transport channels.
